The NOAA was established in 2002 to represent the interests of our environmentally responsible cage culture and land-based aquaculture industry in Ontario. Our members include farmers, processors, hatcheries, suppliers and other stakeholders. Our mandate includes:
• informing and educating the public about aquaculture in Ontario
• coordinating and supporting industry research
• assisting the industry with development
Rainbow trout is the main species raised in Ontario. Farmed trout is naturally low in sodium and calories – and is also an excellent source of complete protein and omega-3 fatty acids. A 31/2 oz. (98 g) serving of farmed trout supplies about 40% of our daily protein requirement – while the high levels of omega-3 fatty acids can help to lower blood triglycerides and cholesterol levels, reduce risk of death from coronary and cardiovascular disease, reduce blood pressure and relieve the pain of rheumatoid arthritis. Farmed trout also provides important iron and B vitamins.
