Meeker's Aquaculture, established in 1986, was the first commercial cage culture farm on Manitoulin Island. The results were encouraging and production has since grown to between 3 and 4,000 tonnes annually.
A rather unique byproduct resulted when Mike Meeker experimented with fish waste and came up with Meeker's Magic Mix - a scientifically developed mixture of fish waste, fish mortalities and sawdust waste from local mills. This research was not just a local effort - Mike brought in the expertise of the University of Guelph whose reputation in the field of aquaculture is known worldwide.
The reality of increased reliance on aquaculture to meet
growing demand is supported by a recent study in the
'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS),' which states that one-half of all seafood consumed is now cultured.
